How to Make Your Own E Liquid

How to Make Your Own E Liquid

There are thousands of e liquids available on the Web and in vape shops, and they are relatively cheap. But there are some out there in the world of vaping who prefer to make their own e liquid. This isn’t as crazy as it sounds because e liquid is actually a simply product containing just a few ingredients plus flavourings.

Why Make Your Own E Liquid?

The main benefit to maing your own e liquid is you can make it exactly how you like it. You can choos your own nicotine straength, your PG/VG ratio and you can play around with flavours to get the perfect e juice for your palate. It has to be said though, that nicotine is a highly poinsonous/toxic product and must be handled with the greatest of care.

What You’ll Need

Bottles

The first thing you’ll need is some empty bottles. You can either recycle old e liquid bottles from previous purchases, or buy your own from a hardware store. If you are going to purchase your own bottles make sure they have child safety lids to prevent any accidents.

Syringes

because you’ll be dealing with tiny quantities of liquid, you’re going to need a syringe with a measure. You can pick up a syringe online and they are available in sizes from 1ml to 30ml. When purchasing a syringe you may need to purchase the needle separately. If you are going to purchase a needle for your syringe make sure you buy a blunt needle as you won’t be using it to pierce skin.

Latex Gloves

When handling toxic liquids like nicotine you want to ensure your skin is protected. The best way to protect your skin is to buy a pack of latex gloves and you can wear a pair each time you’re going to be handling any of the ingredients that go into your e liquid.

Kitchen Roll

Along with your gloves you want to get some kitchen roll so that if you do have any spillages you can quickly mop it up with some disposable tissue.

Ingredients

After you have all your kit ready, you can start looking at the ingredients you’ll need to make your e liquid. E liquid contains 4 main ingredients:

Nicotine

As mentioned, nicotine is a poison and highly toxic substance, so make sure you are extra careful when handling and working with this product. In the UK it’s illegal to purchase nicotine over 75mg per ml, and if you are purchasing e liquid it’s illegal to sell over 18mg. So bear this in mind and make sure you have your measurements correct.

PG Base Liquid

This is the base ingredient of your e liquid and can be purchased in most chemists. The official name is Glycerin B.P and it should be in the cough and cold section.

VG Base Liquid

This is the flavour part of your e liquid. Be very careful when purchasing VG base as some types contain oil and other substances that can’t be vaped. You can shop around and find flavours that are appealing and either mix together to develop a unique flavour or use them as they are. You’ll mix this with your PG base and nicotine to create your finished product.

Distilled Water

Distilled water is used to thin out your final product. It’s vital you use distilled and not tap water to avoid any contaminations.

Mixing Your E Liquid

When mixing your e liquid it’s important to start small. This way if you get the mix wrong you won’t have wasting much of your ingredients. It’s a case of trial and error to begin with, then when you find the perfect blend you can scale up to larger quantities.

As a guide it’s best to stick with ratios that work. For example a typical e liquid without nicotine would contain:

– 15% Water (Optional)
– 15% Flavouring
– 70% Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerine

An e juice with nicotine may look something like this:

– 10% Water (Optional)
– 10% Flavouring
– 60% Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerine
– 20% Commercial Nicotine Liquid

Health and Safety

Remember, when working with nicotine it’s essential you wear the protective gear such as gloves and even goggles when you are mixing your own e liquid. Nicotine is a highly toxic substance and if absorbed through the skin in high quantities it can kill you. When making your e liquid, ensure ingredients are stored away from children and pets. If you do happen to spill nicotine on your skin make sure you rinse the effected area immediately and if you are feeling any negative effects go and see your doctor.

Mixing Your Own E Liquid Benefits

If done correctly, mixing your own e liquid can open up a whole new world to your vaping experience. You can mix your e liquid to the exact formula you like and it will work out cheaper than buying from retailers. It can be a rewarding experience but please make sure you have safety as your priority at all times. If you have any doubts at all then stick to purchasing your e liquid from a reputable supplier.
